Fan favourite Caleb Asberry has confirmed he will return to the Southland Sharks for a third season, giving the club a major boost ahead of the upcoming NZNBL campaign.
Asberry played a key role in the Sharks’ resurgence last season, leading the league in assists with 7.5 per game. He also averaged 16 points and 4.7 rebounds, underlining his all-round impact on the court. One of the highlights of the year came in the home playoff clash against the Auckland Tuatara, where he delivered a stunning 36-point performance that energised the Invercargill crowd.
The American guard is currently playing in Cyprus with Enosis Neon Paralimni, where he is averaging 15 points, six rebounds and 4.5 assists. His strong form overseas signals he will return to New Zealand in top condition.
Sharks Head Coach Jonathan Yim said the re-signing reflects the culture the club is working hard to build.
“Caleb was a huge reason for our turnaround last season,” Yim said. “He sacrificed a lot of his individual stats for the betterment of the team, and that team-first mindset matters when you’re trying to build something great.”
Asberry said coming back to Invercargill was an easy decision.
“The culture and people made it an easy decision,” he said. “From the organisation and my teammates to the wider community, there’s a real belief in what we’re building. I felt trusted and supported, and Invercargill has become my second home.”
He also praised the loyal fan base for its ongoing support.
“The support from the Shark Whānau is genuine and constant. Playing for people who truly care about the team and the region is a powerful motivator.”
Both Yim and Asberry are focused on taking the next step after falling short of a title last season.
“Caleb has shared with me how much it would mean to him to bring a championship to Invercargill,” Yim said. “He’s committed to winning and committed to finishing the job, just like the rest of the players who were part of last season.”
Asberry echoed that determination.
“I’m bringing that energy, I’ll compete at a high level, and I’ll give everything I have to help the Sharks bring a championship to Invercargill,” he said. “We were close last season, and I’m determined to finish the job this year.”
With their first import signing now secured, the Sharks are expected to announce further player additions in the coming weeks. Fans are encouraged to secure season memberships for what promises to be an exciting campaign at ILT Stadium Southland.
