Updated: Invercargill businessman Rick Murrell died following a fishing trip on Lake Manapouri in Fiordland National Park.

Police have launched an investigation into a fatal boating incident on Lake Manapouri that occurred overnight. The search began after two experienced fishers failed to return from a fishing trip on Sunday evening.

Authorities were alerted at around 7:20pm when the pair did not check in by radio or return as expected. A search was launched using marine radios and a local helicopter, which eventually located the missing boat at approximately 12:30am in Safe Cove.

"One was deceased, and the other was in serious condition and treated at hospital where he is recovering well," said Inspector Mike Bowman, Southland Area Commander.

Rick stood for Invercargill City Council in 2022, was also very active in the community. His governance experience includes, Director of New Zealand Motor Trade Association (2005 – 2012), Director of Motor Trade Investments (2010 – 2012) and New Zealand President/Chairperson Motor Trade Association (2011 – 2012).

He also has a long standing involvement in the community, including with Southern Steel netball and the Tour of Southland.

Police have confirmed that they are looking into the events leading up to the discovery of the boat and its occupants. "Police are investigating the series of events before the pair was discovered," Bowman stated.

"Police’s sincere condolences go out to their family and loved ones," Bowman added.
