With the 2025 local body elections fast approaching, nominations for key roles across Invercargill remain low — with even some incumbent councillors yet to confirm whether they will stand again. This will be the first mayoral race without an incumbent since the late Eve Poole, as Mayor Nobby Clark has confirmed he will not seek re-election.

As of 1:04pm on 18 July, the confirmed candidate list is slowly growing for the Invercargill Mayoralty, City Council, Invercargill Licensing Trust (ILT), and Bluff Community Board.
Invercargill Mayoralty (1 vacancy)
- Campbell, Tom
- Crackett, Alex (Independent)
- Morton, Tom (Independent)
- Pottinger, Ian

Invercargill City Council (12 vacancies)

- Dawson, Chris
- de Vries, Andrea
- Morton, Tom (Independent)

So far, only six nominations have been received for the 12-seat council, with some current councillors still unconfirmed. The slow pace of nominations has raised eyebrows, but there’s still time for more candidates to put their hands up.

Bluff Community Board (5 vacancies)
- No nominations received yet
Invercargill Licensing Trust (6 vacancies)
- Carey, Sheree
- Hawkes, Graham ("Hawksy")
- Newell, Angela
- O'Brien, Paddy
With just on ten days left until nominations close on August 1st, a late surge of candidates is expected — but for now, it’s shaping up to be a quieter lead-in than in previous election years.
