• Troopers Memorial closure marks final step in full Dee and Tay resurfacing project
  • Drivers advised of detours and road closures across Southland during Anzac events and upgrades
  • Maintenance schedule may change based on weather, holiday staffing and other local events

The full resurfacing of Dee and Tay Streets in Invercargill is nearly complete, with the final stage now underway. This includes what could be described as the most disruptive but essential final piece of the tar-seal puzzle – the resurfacing of the Troopers Memorial roundabout.

The roundabout will be fully closed overnight from 6pm to 6am on the 27th, 28th and 29th of April for asphalt work. It will remain open during the day. One local driver said, “It’s such a nicer driving experience now not having to avoid potholes.”

A detour plan is in place for all directions around the Troopers roundabout while the work is carried out. Southbound traffic will be diverted via Spey, Deveron and Tay Streets. Northbound drivers will use Forth, Leven and Spey Streets. Eastbound detours are via Liddel and Tweed Streets, while westbound traffic will follow Conon and Tweed Streets.

Work across Southland highways continues over the next two weeks, though many projects are dependent on good weather. A full map of delays and active sites is available here

Upcoming public holidays – Easter Monday, Southland Anniversary and Anzac Day – all fall in the same week, which means highway crews will be operating with limited staff. Motorists are advised to call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS for urgent queries or concerns during this period.

Several Anzac Day events on 25 April will also affect state highways in Invercargill, Gore and Riverton. In Invercargill, State Highway 6 (Dee Street) will be closed southbound from Victoria Avenue to Gala Street between 6.30am and 8.30am. A southbound detour via Victoria Avenue, Leven Street and Spey Street will be available.

In Gore, Main Street will be closed to Mersey Street and Bowler Avenue from 6.30am to 9am. In Riverton, SH99 will close between Princess and Jetty Streets from 10am to 11am, with a short stop/stop control near the Aparima Bridge to allow the Anzac parade to cross safely.

In addition, SH99 in Lorneville Eastbound only will be closed from 8pm on the 27th of April until 8pm on the 30th of April, with detours via Steel Road and Moore Road.

Highway works continue across the region and may be subject to change due to weather. Many projects will be affected by reduced staffing over the Easter, Southland Anniversary and Anzac Day holiday week. Call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) for any urgent highway concerns.
