Gore’s much-loved On The Fly – Mataura River Festival is back on Sunday 22 February, celebrating fly fishing, the Mataura River, and Gore’s proud status as the Brown Trout Capital of New Zealand.
The festival brings together world-class fly-fishing guides for on-river demos, presentations, and fly-tying sessions throughout the afternoon. Bring your rod and waders—or borrow some on the day—and give it a go. Thanks to a special group licence, everyone can try fly fishing, even without their own licence.
This year also hooks in something special: we’re officially naming Gore’s iconic brown trout statue. After years of simply being “the trout,” it’s finally getting a proper name.
In partnership with Hokonui FM, you can cast your suggestions from 2–9 February by texting 5009 or via Hokonui Breakfast with Chitty. Public voting runs 10–15 February, with the winning name revealed at the festival.
Gore District Council Senior Events Coordinator Florine Potts says the event wouldn’t be possible without the fishing community.
“Even in their busiest season, our local guides make time to share their passion. Evening Rise Fly Fishing, Kiwi Fly Fishing, Southland Fly Fishing Club, Fish & Game and others have been incredibly generous with their time and prizes.”
Beyond fishing, the festival is buzzing with food trucks, Hopsession Invercargill craft beer, Hokonui Moonshine, kids’ activities, and creative spaces, making it a fun and easy day out for whānau and friends. The event is family-friendly and dog-friendly, encouraging people to settle in, relax, and enjoy the riverside setting.
On The Fly – Mataura River Festival runs from 1:30–5:30 PM, Sunday 22 February along River Terrace. Free entry. Everyone welcome.
