• Police breath tested around 200 vehicles during a targeted road safety operation in Gore
• Several drivers were charged or fined for alcohol levels and other dangerous behaviours
• Police reminded the public that impaired or distracted driving continues to risk lives
Police in Gore were disappointed by the behaviour of several motorists after a targeted road safety operation found drivers under the influence of alcohol and engaging in other unsafe habits.
Operation Bullseye, carried out by local Police last week, saw around 200 vehicles stopped and breath tested. The initiative aimed to catch people breaking the law and encourage safer driving across the region.
Four drivers were charged with excess breath alcohol, with results over 400 micrograms. One individual, found committing their third similar offence, had their licence revoked on the spot and their vehicle taken away.
Officers also issued several infringements for other offences, including not wearing seatbelts, speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and returning breath alcohol readings between 250 and 400 micrograms.
Sergeant Christopher Dunbar of Gore Public Safety said, “Police were disappointed after Operation Bullseye uncovered several drivers that were driving dangerously and under the influence of alcohol.”
He also reminded drivers to focus on the basics and avoid driving while impaired. “Stick to the basics when driving: watch your speed and your following distances, stay focused – put your phone out of reach – wear your seat belt, and always drive sober and alert.”
Police continue to stress the dangers of impaired driving, highlighting that alcohol and drugs are involved in around 20 percent of all fatal road crashes.
“If you are in any doubt at all about being safe or legal to drive due to impairment, don’t – it’s not worth it.”
Gore Police want to make it clear that drivers can be stopped and checked at any time and in any place.
