• Helicopter will be used for faster and more efficient power line installation across the network
• Work begins 25 August and continues until late September, weather dependent and subject to change
• Bluff Highway and other roads will face closures and delays during helicopter operations

As part of the next stage of the Powernet Awarua Network Project, contractors will soon begin stringing power lines along newly installed poles. This marks a major step towards expanding and connecting the local electricity network. However, it's important to note that these new lines won’t be live until at least October.

To complete this work efficiently, a professional helicopter contractor has been brought in. The aircraft being used is a McDonnell Douglas 520N Notar, known for being around 50 percent quieter than similar-sized helicopters because it doesn’t have a tail rotor.

Preparation for the helicopter work started on 11 August, with flights scheduled from 25 August through to late September. Work will take place Monday to Saturday, but these dates may change depending on weather and how quickly the project progresses.

Here is the current schedule for helicopter activity: (link)

  • 25 – 30 August: Bluff Highway, Colyer Road, Lardner Road, Murphy Road, Gorge Road–Invercargill Highway
  • 1 – 6 September: Wilson Road, Murphy Road, Motu Rimu Road, East Road, Mill Road South
  • 8 – 13 September: Mill Road South to Oteramika Road, Mason Road, Judge Road
  • 15 – 20 September: Tiwai Road, Colyer Road, Behind Ballance Fertiliser
Non-helicopter work: Ascot Racecourse and Findlay Road
  • 22 – 27 September: Backup week in case of delays

The first helicopter stringing will begin on Monday, 25 August. This will include line installation over Bluff Highway and other nearby roads. Safety is a top priority, and traffic management measures will be in place during these operations. Read the Powernet schedule here.

On Tuesday, 26 August, the helicopter will be stringing lines along Kekeno Place and over Bluff Highway (State Highway 1). From 9am, traffic will be held in both directions for up to 10 minutes at a time. Drivers should allow extra time for travel and follow all signage and staff instructions while work is underway.

The use of helicopters is expected to significantly speed up the process, reducing disruption while maintaining safety for everyone involved.
