A 95-year-old Invercargill cyclist is attempting a world record on his birthday.
Pete Grandiek, a Cycling Southland club member, will take to the boards of the Invercargill Velodrome at ILT Stadium Southland on Tuesday October 20, going for the Men's 95+ World Hour Record. He turns 95 on the same day. The attempt starts at 6.00pm.
To set the record, Grandiek must ride 21.5 kilometres within an hour.
Spectators are welcome to watch from the velodrome grandstand. ILT Stadium Southland will have its regular programmes and activities running on the courts in the centre of the velodrome, and Cycling Southland has asked everyone to respect those activities.
The attempt is sanctioned with UCI, Cycling New Zealand and Integrity Sport involved in making it possible. Sponsors Bonisch, Calder Stewart and Cruickshank Pryde have backed the attempt financially.
Grandiek's ride is also a fundraiser for Hospice Southland. Donation details are available through Cycling Southland's social media channels.
