ILT once again brought festive cheer to Invercargill’s older residents, hosting the first of two Christmas dinners for people aged over 70 at the Ascot Park Hotel last night.
Now a much-loved annual tradition, the event saw 700 guests treated to a three-course meal served by ILT board members and staff, all of whom volunteered their time to help make the evening special.
Adding extra meaning to the night, longtime performer Margaret Bates celebrated 30 years of playing at the event. Her familiar melodies on the keyboard have become a staple of the occasion, helping to create the warm and welcoming atmosphere guests look forward to each year.

Entertainment on the night showcased a range of local talent, starting with the FEMME Choir from Southland Girls’ High School, whose harmonies added a magical touch. High-energy performances from Empire Aerobics impressed the crowd, while Invercargill Musical Theatre members brought a touch of nostalgia with well-known musical numbers.
ILT President Paddy O’Brien said, “The board and staff look forward to this event every year, it really is a highlight for us.” He added, “It’s a special chance to spend time with the older members of our community and recognise the contribution they continue to make to our city.”

ILT Chief Executive Chris Ramsay echoed the sentiment, saying, “We are delighted to continue the tradition. It is a fun occasion for both our guests and our volunteers.” He also noted the event’s importance during tough economic times. “With the rising cost of living, it feels even more important to offer a night out where people can simply relax, enjoy themselves and let us take care of them.”
The Christmas dinners have been a part of Invercargill’s festive season since 1993. In that time, over 25,000 meals have been served, creating memories for generations of residents and strengthening the community bond.
This year, ILT expanded the way guests could register for the event, offering both postal and online options. The digital system proved popular, with more than 80% of attendees registering online.
