Some people marked “Dry July” by giving up alcohol — but Invercargill JB Hi-Fi staff had a different take, plunging into the freezing surf at Oreti Beach in the middle of winter.

The July event was held to support mental health, raising $3026 for McKenzie’s Gift, a charity providing mental health support for children and teenagers.

Invercargill manager Tony Keay said the business supports six charity “Helping Hand” partners, and staff wanted to do something memorable.

“A third of our team — eight staff — were brave enough to head out one Sunday night after work and dunk themselves at Oreti Beach. Now other JB stores around the country are following our lead,” Keay said.

The idea has since spread, with JB Hi-Fi Dunedin joining in and daring Nelson to take part as well.

Keay said he was proud of the effort and the community response.

“I’d like to shout out a big thanks to Invercargill and our team. I’m so proud of all the support for Kenzie’s Gift. Invercargill led the charge with our mid-winter swim and topped the donations for a store nationwide.”
