Liam MacDonald and Anthony Ralston, both from Invercargill, were named joint winners of the Southland Sports Car Club (SSCC) Champions Trophy at the club’s 2024/2025 prizegiving, held at Teretonga Park on Monday night.
For MacDonald, it marked a remarkable twelfth time winning the trophy, having first claimed it in 2013 and every year since, except 2017. Ralston, meanwhile, earned his first title win, following in the footsteps of his father Robert, who won the trophy in 2009 and 2010.
The SSCC Championship is determined by points earned across various club disciplines. MacDonald gained his share of the title by dominating multiple categories. He won the Keith McFadzien Trophy for the Motorkhana Championship for the seventh time, ahead of Andrew Kennedy and Craig Allan. He also claimed the SSCC Speed Trophy for the Sprint Championship for the fifth consecutive year, with Allan and Vega Mukri finishing behind him. MacDonald also took home the Stresscrete 1601cc & Over Speed Trophy in ClubSport and the Warren Robbie Memorial Trophy for winning the overall ClubSport Championship for the fifth time.
Ralston competed in both ClubSport and Race Championships. He claimed the Auto Centre Trophy for the 2501cc & Over Race Class, finishing ahead of Lynden Prebble and Kyle Dawson. He also won the Erskine Flying Farewell Trophy from Prebble and was runner-up in the overall Race Championship, with Prebble taking the win and Kevin Underwood in third place.
The pair finished the season level on points, resulting in a rare shared championship title.
Craig Allan of Invercargill placed second in the overall Club Championship. His results included runner-up positions in the Sprint and ClubSport Championships and third place in the Motorkhana category.
Other notable winners included Blake Cooper, who won the Discount Tyres 0-1600 Championship Speed Trophy in ClubSport and received the club’s Junior Driver Award for the second consecutive year. Nieko Scoles secured the 1601-2500cc Race Championship, with Bradley Dawson and Warren Kett finishing second and third. Rachael Beck received the SSCC Ladies Champion Trophy for the ninth time, continuing a record of wins that began in 2010.
Greg McLeod was honoured with the Macks Panel & Paint Marshall Of The Year award. A long-serving incident recovery team member, McLeod has been a reliable presence at Teretonga Park for nearly twenty years.
