The timer on Mayor Nobby Clark’s watch says he has just 83 days to go in the hot seat.
Having spent several weeks in and out of hospital after a series of mini-strokes, he knows that if he doesn’t slow down, he could experience something more serious with his health.
Mayor Clark also suffered a heart attack in December 2023 and underwent a double bypass. He’s endured skin and thyroid cancer in the past few years as well.
The message was clear from doctors this time as it was back then; that he had to lower his stress levels and blood pressure.
After a series of scans, tests, x-rays and ultrasounds, doctors can’t find any damage at all to his body, and his brain is okay, “but some people would argue the contrary,” - well the humour is still there, so that’s a good sign.
The hypertension had been building for some time. He’s on new medication and understands that the stress was part operational and part “the nature of the beast.”
Mayor Clark admits he can’t let things go and keeps tackling things. He said not just in this job but also in past jobs, and there have been consequences.
For the remaining time of his mayoralty, he’ll only attend ceremonial matters, starting today (Saturday July 19).
He intends to keep a low profile leading up to the Election 2025 in October, and will let the four mayoral candidates do their thing.
Councils can’t make any major decisions three months out from an election, “that would tie the hands of the next council,” so it was a good time to slow right down.
