The MLT Moonshine Trail marked its 20th year with a strong turnout and festive atmosphere at Dolamore Park on Saturday, February 14. First held in 2006, the event has grown steadily to become the province’s largest mountain biking and offroad running event.
Run by Active Southland, the trail has built a loyal following over two decades. Communications manager Nathan Burdon said the milestone reflected a wide network of support behind the scenes.
“You’ve got the landowners who provide once-a-year access to their properties, the amazing volunteers from the Hokonui Mountainbike Club who prepare the trails and course, Gore District Council staff who ensure Dolamore Park is in pristine condition and our long-standing naming sponsor the MLT,” Burdon said.
“From our perspective, we pull in Active Southland staff from across our organisation to help out and ensure everyone has a quality experience on the day.”
About 450 competitors took part in biking, running and walking categories. Mild and overcast conditions created near-perfect racing weather, especially for those tackling the longer courses.
Riders and runners were rewarded not only with challenging courses but also with special mementos. All participants received a commemorative 20th anniversary medal, while one lucky entrant won a new mountain bike courtesy of CrossRoads Cycles.
In the open men’s 50km mountain bike event, Josh Haggerty claimed a provisional win, fresh from helping Josh Burnett secure a third Tour of Southland title last month. Zara Mackley won the women’s 50km race.
Gore’s Nic Sowerby took out the men’s 39km event, while Invercargill’s Tracey Hamilton won the women’s race. Andrew Brown, also from Invercargill, won the 30km category and was the first veteran rider home. Gore’s Hannah Wilson claimed the women’s 30km honours.
In the trail runs, Dunedin’s Kristy Eyles won the women’s 15km event, with Invercargill’s Craig Iverson finishing as the first male runner. Gore junior Lily Wiegersma impressed in the 5km race, winning in 24 minutes and 20 seconds, just ahead of fellow junior Freya Gilmour.
Family-friendly options also proved popular. The 2km walk and bike events returned after a successful debut last year, alongside the Hokonui Mountain Bike Club’s 12km Explorer category. Together, they ensured people of all ages and fitness levels could be part of the milestone celebration.
