Before Spotify and TikTok, Southland’s music scene thrived in pubs, clubs, and late-night gigs across Invercargill. Bands built their reputation live, often loud, one show at a time.

To kick off Muso Mondays, we’re looking back at one of the city’s most memorable bands from the late 1990s and early 2000s—Grogan.

Grogan emerged from Invercargill’s vibrant scene and became known for their energetic live performances. The lineup included Nick Smith (vocals), Simon Smith, Hayden Budd, Dallas Bradshaw, and others.

Their alternative rock sound—raw and chaotic—set them apart. Grogan became a staple at venues like Tillermans, Southland Musicians’ Club, and at festivals like Cherrystock.

In 1999, frontman Nick Smith was named Southland Musicians’ Club Entertainer of the Year.

Their debut album, Speedy, was recorded at Southland Polytechnic, capturing that live energy. Tracks like South Kill and Superhero became fan favorites.

Around 2001, Grogan headed to Melbourne, aiming to test their sound in Australia. Though their Invercargill legend was well established, they took their shot across the Tasman.
