Southland and Invercargill have been battered by severe weather this morning, with the region experiencing a combination of heavy rain, hail, and a significant amount of thunder and lightning. A strong wind warning remains in effect, driven by a low-pressure system moving across the Tasman Sea.
Strong Wind Warning: An Strong Wind Warning is in effect for parts of Southland, including areas about and south of Gore, and Stewart Island, from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday. Severe gale west to southwest winds, gusting up to 120 km/h in exposed areas, are expected.
There is a low chance of this being upgraded to a Red Warning. Residents should be prepared for potential damage to trees, power lines, and unsecured structures. Driving may be difficult, particularly for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles. A Strong Wind Watch is also in place for other parts of Southland, where winds may approach severe gale force.
