- Operation Hawk led to multiple arrests and the seizure of drugs and illegal firearms
- Search warrants were executed in Invercargill and Mataura Island earlier this week
- Police say illegal hunting poses serious risks and will not be tolerated
Police have arrested two men and seized firearms, ammunition and drugs during a targeted crackdown in Southland.
The operation, named Operation Hawk, focused on tackling illegal hunting and related criminal activity. Officers executed four search warrants across Invercargill and Mataura Island, leading to the recovery of methamphetamine, cannabis, ammunition, three firearms, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The effort was supported by detectives from the Southern District Organised Crime Group, who worked to dismantle the dangerous combination of weapons, drugs, and unlawful behaviour.
Senior Constable Nicky Herbert said illegal hunting was far more than a countryside nuisance. “The presence of firearms and drugs in these contexts significantly escalates the potential for harm,” she said.
She added that Police remained committed to stopping this kind of criminal activity. “Police remain committed to identifying and holding accountable those who engage in illegal hunting and associated offending. These actions are not only criminal but dangerous, and they will not be tolerated.”
Two men, aged 24 and 28, are facing several charges including unlawful possession of firearms, reckless discharge of firearms, and entering agricultural land with the intent to commit a crime. Further charges are being considered.
The 24-year-old will appear in the Gore District Court on 27 August. The 28-year-old is due to reappear in the Invercargill District Court on 16 September.
Police are continuing to appeal to the public for help in stopping illegal hunting and ask anyone with information to contact them directly on 105, visit a local station, or report anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
