The role of Mayor is about strong leadership and collaboration. As Mayor, I would guide the governance of the city and work closely with our Chief Executive Officer to ensure Council’s management and governance are aligned. I believe my leadership experience and my partnership skills, honed over five terms on Council and years managing a successful technology business, uniquely position me to lead Invercargill through the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Over the years, I’ve focused on making sure that Council works in the best interests of the people of Invercargill. One of my key achievements was advocating for the removal of elected members as directors on Council-controlled companies, a move that ensures transparency and accountability. I also fought hard to secure the continuation of the Recycle South’s recycling contract, which has an important social impact by providing work opportunities and contributing to community well-being.
As an elected member, I have never been afraid to speak up when things aren’t right. For example, I held the current Mayor to account by raising a formal code of conduct complaint in response to behaviour that didn’t meet the standard expected of our leadership. As Mayor, I would continue to lead with integrity and hold myself and others to the highest standards.
Financial discipline is another priority for me. Council spending and its impact on rates are issues that concern every resident. It’s crucial that we have a clear strategy in place to curb unnecessary spending. This includes reviewing our procurement policy to ensure we’re always getting the best value for money and working closely with the CEO to develop a plan to address rates concerns, especially in light of potential government rates capping.
But financial responsibility is just one piece of the puzzle. As Mayor, I will work proactively to foster growth by supporting new business ventures and opportunities in our city. We need to shift the mindset from "How can we hinder?" to "How can we help?" Whether it's reducing red tape or finding ways to encourage investment, I am committed to ensuring Invercargill thrives for generations to come.
I am proud of what we have accomplished together as a community, and I believe we can achieve even more. As your Mayor, I will lead with both experience and integrity, always focused on building a brighter future for Invercargill.
I ask for your support in this important journey to ensure our city grows, prospers, and remains a great place to live for everyone.
