Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen officially opened its doors in Invercargill today, bringing its world-famous fried chicken to Southlanders for the very first time.
Located on Dee Street, the new restaurant is the brand’s 10th store in New Zealand and marks its debut in the South Island. Popeyes is renowned globally for its Louisiana-inspired menu featuring crispy fried chicken, biscuits, and signature sides.
Back in April, What’s On Invers first broke the news that Popeyes was set to take over the former JJ’s site, and today that tip has become reality with the store’s official opening.
“We’re excited to finally bring Popeyes to Invercargill,” said a company spokesperson. “This opening is not just about delicious food – it’s about being part of the local community and creating new jobs as we continue our rapid growth across New Zealand.”
Christchurch is next on the list, with a store due to open later this year. Popeyes has confirmed that a further 10 outlets will join the network in 2026, highlighting its commitment to making the brand more accessible nationwide.
The chain was founded in New Orleans in 1972 and today operates more than 4,300 restaurants worldwide. New Zealand is one of the fastest-growing markets for Popeyes, with fans eagerly lining up at every launch.
Southlanders now have the first taste of what’s to come.
