Southland’s genre-blending nine-piece band Rhythmonyx is preparing to unveil their first full-length music video, “Bones”, during a video release party at Gadoochi Brewery on Saturday, August 23 at 8PM.
Written, recorded, produced, and mixed completely in their Invercargill CBD jam room, “Bones” is a bold show of creativity and self-reliance. Band member Rhys White said the project was a significant milestone for Rhythmonyx.
“The initial goal was to record, produce, and mix the new song in house and keep the whole process as simple as possible – something I realised very quickly that was almost impossible for a band of this size, but we persevered,” said Rhys.
“We blended produced drums, keys, and recorded bass with live sessions, and did it all in our jam room where we’re most comfortable. That energy really comes through in the track.”
The video was crafted by local production team Second Beer, featuring Nick McGrath and James Wilkinson, known for their work with Southland musician Lachie Hayes. This collaboration adds another chapter to the region’s growing independent music scene.
“Second Beer Film and Production absolutely nailed it on this one— they’re such a rad team to work with,” said Rhys.
Nick McGrath, Second Beer’s creative director, described the video-making process as inspiring and collaborative.
“From our first listen, Bones was an atmospheric trip full of twists and turns,” Nick said.
“A big shout out to lead actors Lilly Ellison and Riley Smith; choreographer Tim Fletcher and his dancers; and to the wider Second Beer crew. Cheers also to the Southern Institute of Technology for their ongoing support, and to Rhythmonyx for entrusting us."
The event will include the first public screening of the “Bones” video, a live performance by Rhythmonyx, and an insight session with Second Beer discussing the video’s concept and production. Hosted by PHX MC, the night promises to be a creative celebration at one of Invercargill’s best-known craft beer venues.
“Bones” was mastered by Troy Kelly at The Armoury Studio in Wellington and will be available from August 23 on Apple Music and all major streaming platforms.
