Southlanders are being advised of major travel disruptions in Invercargill next week, as South Roads has confirmed a full closure of the SH1 Clyde Street and Tweed Street roundabout. The roundabout will be closed 24/7 from 9pm on Sunday 13 April until 7pm Tuesday 15 April, for critical asphalt resurfacing work.

The project is expected to take two days, but contractors have allowed for up to four days in case of poor weather or unforeseen ground conditions.

For those travelling from Invercargill Airport:

  • Heading South – use Bond Street/Ettrick Street
  • Heading North – use Bond Street/Spey Street
  • Heading East – use Bond Street/Ettrick Street/Conon Street

For those heading to the airport:

  • From the South – use Ettrick Street/Bond Street
  • From the North – use Spey Street/Bond Street
  • From the East – use Conon Street/Ettrick Street/Bond Street

🚧 Heavy and HPMV Vehicles:

  • North/South-bound – detour via Bond Street Bypass
  • East-bound – detour via Bond Street Bypass, then Bowmont/Conon/Tweed/Rockdale Roads
    • For vehicles over 4.3m in height, use Inglewood Road/Tweed Street
  • All routes should be reversed for return travel.

Travellers to and from Invercargill Airport should allow extra time, particularly during peak hours, to avoid missing flights or appointments.

The closure is part of wider Highways South work happening across the region. Other key maintenance activities include:

  • SH1 Bluff Highway pavement repairs near Stanley Township Road and McGorlick Street
  • SH93 Old Coach Road repairs in several locations
  • SH96 Wreys Bush–Nightcaps Highway pavement renewal

Mobile road marking is also in progress along SH6 in Lumsden, SH99 from Invercargill to Tuatapere, SH97, and SH98.

Third-party work includes:

  • SH6 North Road in Invercargill with a lane closed for cable installation
  • SH96 at Winton with stop/go traffic for tree works

Further planned resurfacing for April and May includes SH1/SH6 Troopers roundabout, SH1 at Kekeno Place, and SH99 at Lorneville.

Additional road closures in the Southland District include:

  • Bridge Inn Road (10 March – 1 May) for bridge replacement
  • Derby Road, Limehills (11 March – 30 April) for pavement work
  • Felton Road, Mossburn (28 April – 2 May) for culvert replacement
  • Te Anau Town Centre closed on 25 April from 10am–12pm for the Anzac parade
  • Leamington Street, Waikaia (14–28 April) for pedestrian crossing installation outside Waikaia School

Drivers are encouraged to follow all detour signage and expect minor delays in affected areas.
