Here’s the latest roading update for 25–31 August from Southland District Council, Invercargill City Council, and Highways South, highlighting where to expect maintenance work and possible delays.

Road Closures

  • Oreti: Durham Street from Mary Street to John Street will be closed between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm on Monday, August 25, with Tuesday, August 26 as a backup day. This is for the replacement of a pole and aerial road crossing. A detour is available via Mary Street, Park Street, and John Street, or alternatively, Mary Street, Mackenzie Street, and John Street.
  • Stewart Island Rakiura: Golden Bay Road from View Street to Dundee Street will be closed from 7:30 am Monday, August 25 until 6:30 pm Friday, August 29, 2025, to enable test cores to be taken. A detour will be available westbound via Dundee Street, Excelsior Road, and View Street, and eastbound via View Street and Excelsior Road.
  • Weir Road: Weir Road is currently closed for at least the next three hours as a crane has arrived at Weir Road bridge to lift out a truck. Efforts to lift the crashed truck have been hampered by unsuitable terrain, and the crane will need to reset its position. The road and bridge will remain closed all this afternoon and will reopen tonight. Tomorrow, efforts will continue, and the bridge will be closed again until the truck can be safely removed. When the road reopens, it will be under 10km/h speed management. Please consider alternative routes this afternoon.
