Police in Invercargill made a major breakthrough after what began as a routine bail check turned into a late-night arrest operation. The incident took place shortly after midnight, when officers visited a property for a standard bail condition check.

As one of the occupants opened the door, officers immediately noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from inside the house. This prompted them to carry out a warrantless search under the Search and Surveillance Act 2012.

During the search, Police found various drug-related items, including drug utensils, small amounts of cannabis and methamphetamine, a knuckleduster, and around $12,000 in cash.

Inspector Mike Bowman, Southland Area Commander, praised the efforts of his team, saying, “This started as a routine visit to a property for a bail check, but resulted in the arrest of two gang members and a gang prospect. To recover the drugs and other items as well is a real bonus, and a reminder to those who commit offences that Police will hold you to account.”

Three men, aged 28, 29, and 45, were arrested at the scene. They now face charges relating to drugs, weapons, and driving offences.

Police say further enquiries are ongoing as they continue to investigate the wider circumstances surrounding the incident.
