Southland rugby fans are gearing up for an exciting afternoon this Saturday as the SBS Bank Southland Stags take on Canterbury at Rugby Park in Invercargill. This match marks Southland’s first defence of the Ranfurly Shield in the current season, with expectations high and a strong crowd anticipated.
The match will be captained by loose forward Sean Withy, who will also mark a personal milestone by playing his blazer game for the province. The team will take the field wearing their club socks – a tradition that highlights the local roots of each player.
Co-coaches James Wilson and Nathan White have named a solid side for the challenge, expressing confidence in the team's preparation and energy leading into the weekend.
“Co Coaches James Wilson and Nathan White are pleased to announce the side to take on Canterbury,” a team spokesperson said.
Adding to the buzz around the day, a curtain-raiser match between the Southland Development and Canterbury Development teams will take place before the main fixture. Kick-off for the development game is at 1.30pm, with gates to the stadium opening from 1pm.
The Stags vs Canterbury clash is part of the Bunnings Warehouse NPC, with excitement building across the region as fans prepare to get behind their team in what could be a season-defining match.
Tickets for the match are available online through Ticketek or in person at the Civic Theatre. Given the level of interest, supporters are encouraged to get their tickets early.
