Southland residents are being urged to prepare for gale-force winds this afternoon and evening as MetService has a Strong Wind Warning in place for Stewart Island and a Strong Wind Watch for much of Southland south of Gore, including coastal areas and Dunedin.

Situation
A series of fronts embedded in a strong west–southwest flow is sweeping across the lower South Island. While the morning begins with cloudy skies and occasional showers, the main concern will be increasing winds through the afternoon.

Stewart Island – Warning

  • When: 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday
  • Forecast: Severe southwest gales gusting up to 130 km/h in exposed places
  • Impact: Potential damage to trees, powerlines and unsecured property. Driving conditions dangerous for motorcycles and high-sided vehicles.

Southland South of Gore, Clutha & Dunedin – Watch

  • When: 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday
  • Forecast: West to southwest winds may reach severe gale strength in exposed and coastal areas.
  • Impact: Blowing debris possible, challenging travel on coastal highways.
  • Chance of upgrade: Moderate – may become a full Warning if conditions worsen.

Gore & Inland Southland
Gore and inland towns will be windier than usual, though less exposed than the coast or Stewart Island. Expect gusts building through the afternoon, easing overnight.

Invercargill

  • Afternoon: Winds gusting to 65 km/h+, with showers clearing to brighter spells.
  • Evening: Cooler, partly cloudy, temperatures dipping to 4 °C overnight.
  • Tomorrow (Tuesday): Showers return at times, westerlies remain brisk. High around 11 °C.

What To Do

  • Secure outdoor items such as trampolines, outdoor furniture and rubbish bins.
  • Take care on the roads, especially if driving a truck, campervan or towing a trailer.
  • Stay up to date with the latest warnings at MetService.com
