The Southland Sharks basketball team are celebrating a standout season, reaching the 2025 Sal’s NBL grand final for the first time in over seven years. The achievement has captured the attention of the wider New Zealand basketball community and the Invercargill locals who have been behind the team every step of the way.
General Manager Murray Brown acknowledged the significance of local support in helping the team get this far. “This is what makes the Invercargill community so great; not only do we have a vocal fan base but also proactive and responsive community funders whose unwavering support is vital to the success of our organisation.”
The Sharks have returned the support by making their presence felt off the court. Players have taken part in coaching sessions, shown up at community events, and even raced fans down the court after home games. The club’s strong community outreach has helped reinforce bonds between the team and their supporters.
Head Coach Jonathan Yim has played a hands-on role in community connection. He’s attended business events, met fans and sponsors, and taken part in local festivals such as the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival. He’s even become a regular face at local cafés and restaurants, underlining the team’s commitment to Invercargill.
The efforts have not gone unnoticed. ILT President Paddy O’Brien said, “The Sharks have done a superb job of bringing the community along on this journey and we are proud of our long-standing support of the organisation. We love that our community – especially our tamariki – have the chance to not only see but to interact with the players, coaches and support staff.”
Fan support has extended beyond home games. Loyal supporters have gathered at ILT venues to watch the team play away matches, showing their dedication even from a distance.
Murray Brown summed up the impact of the team’s community-first approach: “This is a great example of how the community model works both ways—with the team giving to the community, and key funders ILT and Community Trust recognising that by providing the necessary support in return.”
He added that the team is feeling confident and ready for the challenge ahead. “The team is in good spirits and full of self-belief. We are confident that the players, coaches, and management will be ready for the Grand Final and continue to make the province proud.”
The grand final will be held at 2.40 pm this Sunday at TSB Arena in Wellington, where the Sharks will take on the top-seeded Saints. Watch parties are set to take place at the Northern and Waikiwi taverns in Invercargill.
