The Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel have claimed top spot on the ANZ Premiership table after a commanding 61-48 victory over Waikato Bay of Plenty Avis Magic in Tauranga last night.
The Steel's fourth consecutive win came despite early pressure from the Magic, who were desperate for their first points of the season at their home venue of Mercury Baypark Arena.
After a tight opening quarter that finished locked at 14-14, the Steel found their rhythm in the second quarter with a crucial four-minute burst that shifted momentum decisively in their favour.
"Breaking the deadlock in a key four-minute period of play in the second quarter was the turning point for the Steel," with the defensive efforts of Carys Stythe and Khanye' Lii Munro-Nonoa proving pivotal alongside the leadership of centre Kimiora Poi.
The Magic started strongly with Georgie Edgecombe at centre and Sarah Guiney at goal attack, stepping in for the injured Saviour Tui. Playing with nothing to lose, they matched the Steel early on with confident shooting from Kate Taylor and solid work from Guiney.
"The match-up between Edgecombe and Poi in the middle promised plenty, and the duo delivered in the opening quarter."
However, the visitors found their edge midway through the second quarter when wing attack Serina Daunakamakama intercepted on the transverse line, sparking a defensive surge that created a seven-goal buffer.
Despite the Magic making changes, bringing Losa Fifita into goal keep and Erena Mikaere to goal defence, they trailed 23-31 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Steel's defensive unit tighten further, with coach Wendy Frew able to rotate her full bench throughout the match. The Steel maintained control despite the Magic landing the first two-point shots of the game, leading 49-37 at the final break.
For the Steel, this victory represents a remarkable turnaround since their opening round loss, with the Southland-based team building momentum through each game.
The Magic, meanwhile, remain winless after five rounds despite showing improvement. Their inability to convert defensive turnovers into points has been a recurring theme throughout their challenging start to the season.
The Steel now sit atop the Premiership ladder as they head into the second half of their campaign with confidence and depth across all positions.
