Two Southland locals were recognised for their exceptional service yesterday during an investiture ceremony at Government House, Wellington. Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro presented honours to country music legend Suzanne Prentice and community volunteer Neville Gordon Phillips.
Suzanne Prentice, 66, was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for her contributions to music and the community. Her career spans more than five decades, highlighted by chart success, numerous album releases, and a lasting impact on New Zealand’s country music scene.
Alongside her musical achievements, Prentice has made significant contributions to charitable causes and community leadership. She has served on the Invercargill Licensing Trust board since 2004 and supported many fundraising initiatives locally and internationally, notably through her long association with World Vision. Suzanne also volunteers at Hospice Southland.
Prentice’s latest honour adds to a distinguished career recognised both in New Zealand and Australia.
Neville Gordon Phillips was also honoured, receiving the King’s Service Medal (KSM) for over five decades of voluntary service. Phillips is a life member and former officer of the Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade and has dedicated years to Fire and Emergency New Zealand. His community spirit also shines through his founding role in the Gore District Ice Skating Club, now Ice Sports Southland, promoting ice sports across the region.
Investiture ceremonies at Government House will continue until 3 May, celebrating achievements in education, health, conservation and Māori arts. A full list of recipients can be found on the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet website.
