“It is a real privilege to have been reselected as National’s candidate for Southland. Representing this electorate has been a real privilege, and I’m proud to once again put my name forward to serve the people of Southland.”

Mr Mooney was first elected in 2020 and has since built a strong reputation as a practical, hardworking local MP focused on the issues that matter to the region, from farming and conservation to transport, housing, tourism, health, education and regional growth.

“Southland is an extraordinary electorate. It stretches from productive rural heartland to some of the most spectacular tourism destinations in the world. It is home to hardworking farmers, small business owners, families, tradies, community volunteers and innovators, and they all deserve a strong voice in Parliament.”

Mr Mooney said his focus remained firmly on backing Southland’s key industries, standing up for regional communities, and making sure growth is matched with the infrastructure and services local people need.

“The Southland electorate is bigger than Belgium and includes significant areas of Southland, Queenstown-Lakes and Otago and I’ve worked hard to advocate for all of it on the issues that matter. Whether that’s backing our primary sector, improving transport links, advocating for health and education services in our communities, supporting regional development, pushing for infrastructure investment, or ensuring our growing communities are not left behind.”

He said Southlanders value substance over slogans and want practical representation from someone who knows the realities of regional New Zealand.

“Southlanders are pragmatic people. They expect their MP to listen, to front up, and to get on with the job. That’s how I’ve approached this role, and that’s exactly how I’ll continue.”

Mr Mooney said his own life story had shaped his politics and his commitment to service.

“I know what hardship looks like. I know what it means to come through tough circumstances, to build something through hard work, and to value the opportunities this country can provide when we get the settings right. That’s why I care so deeply about making sure New Zealand remains a place where people, families and communities can thrive.”

Before entering Parliament, Mr Mooney worked across a range of industries, built a successful law business, volunteered as a firefighter, and served in the Army Reserves. He said those experiences gave him a grounded understanding of both the challenges and opportunities facing New Zealand.

“I’ve never taken this role for granted. I know who I work for, and that is the people of Southland.”

Mr Mooney said there was still more to do for the electorate, particularly as Southland and the wider lower South continue to grow and change.

“This region has huge potential. Whether it’s farming, tourism, energy, conservation, technology, or infrastructure, Southland has an enormous role to play in New Zealand’s future. I want to keep championing that potential and making sure our communities get the attention and investment they deserve.”

Mr Mooney said he was humbled by the strong support he received at the last election, when Southlanders returned him with a majority of more than 17,000 votes, and said he remained focused on earning that trust every day.

“That result was deeply humbling. My job is to continue working hard to earn the trust Southlanders have placed in me.”

He thanked National Party members and supporters across the electorate for their continued confidence and support.

“I want to sincerely thank the local National Party members for their confidence in me, and everyone across the electorate who has supported me over the past two terms. I’m looking forward to getting back out across Southland, hearing from people directly, and continuing the work.”
