The second Southern Pro Wrestling (SPW) fight of the year is happening this weekend at the Corinthians Centre.

But with injuries plaguing the lineup, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will actually show up for the Battlelines Cup on Saturday night.

Co-organiser Kane Bates (aka K-9) said with three to four injuries amongst wrestlers, the lineup of matches was changing by the day, “but it will all just come together on the night.”

JK Moody was sporting a broken hand and may not be able to defend his title from the inaugural event last year - but it sounded like he was still going to compete.

Another competitor had fractured his knee so could be performing in a moon boot, but that was just the luck of the draw in the wrestling world, Kane said.

Southern Pro Wrestling was having a busy year, having taken the team on tour in April, starting with Balclutha and another event planned for Gore on June 22.

Kane said they received a good turnout in Balclutha where 180 people turned up, “it was actually a good show and they were louder than Queenstown.”

The biggest crowd SPW has had was back in 2017 at ILT Stadium Southland when 1200 people turned up for the one-off event featuring a WWF wrestler.

“The venue definitely makes it.”

In August SPW will celebrate 10 years of shows with a special anniversary event at Transport World.

Kane said it had taken a lot of preparation work to get there, but it had all been worth it, and would make for a special night for the audience.

Doors open 6pm this Saturday and the show starts 7pm.
