Southland pulled off another hard-fought NPC victory on Thursday night, edging Bay of Plenty 30–25.

The Steamers controlled the opening half, but couldn’t crack the Stags’ defence beyond a try to Josh Bartlett. Mika Muliaina’s accurate kicking kept Southland in the contest, trailing just 7–6 at the break.

The second half was a true arm wrestle. Nic Shearer and Nic Souchon both crossed for Southland, while Kaleb Trask kept Bay of Plenty in front with a try and penalties. With the game on the line, the Stags’ bench made the difference – Michael Manson slicing through for a decisive late try, converted by Byron Smith to seal the win.

Southland’s forward pack, led by skipper Sean Withy, set the tone with physical defence and crucial turnovers, while big carries from Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa and Faletoi Peni kept the Steamers under pressure.

Bay of Plenty left frustrated after dominating territory but leaving with only a bonus point.

Full-time: Southland 30, Bay of Plenty 25.
