The SBS Bank Southland Stags have confirmed the signings of rising outside back Denzel Samoa and loose forward Konrad Toleafoa for the 2026 NPC season, strengthening their squad with two in-form Moana Pasifika players.
Both athletes have impressed during the early stages of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific campaign. Their recent performances have highlighted their athleticism, commitment and growing confidence at professional level, earning them an opportunity to join Rugby Southland next year.
Samoa’s journey to professional rugby has been far from typical. Born and raised in Auckland, he spent much of his recent career playing rugby league in Queensland’s Queensland Cup competition. In 2025, he made the switch to rugby union, quickly drawing attention for his speed, agility and natural flair.
Later that year, he returned to Auckland for a trial with Moana Pasifika, following a similar pathway to current Stag Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa. Samoa impressed coaches and secured a place in the club’s wider training group for the 2026 season.

He made an early statement during preseason with a solo try against the Highlanders before earning his Super Rugby debut against the Fiji Drua last week.
Stags Head Coach Scott Eade praised Samoa’s rapid progress.
“Denzel’s transition from league to union has been outstanding. His athletic ability, work ethic and willingness to learn have seen him make rapid progress. We’re extremely proud of the way he has taken his opportunity with Moana Pasifika and we’re excited about what he’ll bring to Southland in 2026. He’s an X-factor player who can light up a game.”
Toleafoa’s pathway has also reflected steady growth and determination. He previously spent time in the Highlanders Under 20 set-up while completing his university studies, balancing academic goals with his rugby ambitions.
Over the past two seasons, he has made several NPC appearances and continued to develop his all-round game. Strong form during Moana Pasifika’s preseason campaign earned him a further opportunity against the Highlanders, and he is now set to make his first Super Rugby start against the Hurricanes this weekend.
Eade said Toleafoa’s work rate and physical style would add real strength to the Stags pack.
“Konrad understands what it means to work hard for your opportunity. He’s a tough, abrasive loose forward who brings real physical presence and competitiveness. To see him earn a starting Super Rugby debut is a testament to his attitude and preparation. We’re delighted to secure him for the next two years and look forward to seeing him grow in a Stags jersey.”
The Southland Stags will welcome both players as preparations continue for the 2026 NPC season.
