Kane Thompson is returning to the SBS Bank Southland Stags, with Rugby Southland confirming his appointment as Assistant Coach for the 2026 season.

The former Stag and Samoan international will take charge of the forwards and breakdown, adding valuable experience to the coaching group as the side prepares for the next chapter under Head Coach Scott Eade.

Rugby Southland CEO Hua Tamariki said the organisation was delighted to welcome Thompson back.

“With Scotty stepping into his first year as Head Coach, we felt it was important he rounded out his coaching team with someone who brings both experience and a genuine connection to our province. Kane has a deep love for the Stags and Southland, and we are delighted he has agreed to return for the 2026 season.”

Thompson previously served as Forwards Coach during the 2024 campaign, earning strong feedback from players and management. While he was unavailable for the 2025 season, his earlier impact left a lasting impression.

“Kane reviewed extremely positively at the end of the 2024 campaign with both players and management in his role as Forwards Coach. Unfortunately, he was unavailable to return in 2025, but we’re very pleased to have him back on board,” Tamariki said.

Head Coach Scott Eade also welcomed the appointment, saying Thompson’s presence would play an important role as the squad builds towards 2026.

“Kane is someone I have huge respect for - both as a coach and as a person. He brings real clarity, high standards, and a deep understanding of what it means to be a Southland Stag. The boys responded really well to him in 2024, and having his experience around our group will be massive as we build into 2026. I’m really looking forward to working alongside him.”

Thompson’s return completes the Stags’ coaching and management group for the 2026 season. With a strong connection to the province and proven experience within the squad, his appointment signals a clear focus on continuity and building momentum ahead of the new campaign.
