A person has sadly died following a workplace incident at the Te Anau transfer station on the Manapouri-Te Anau Highway late Friday (3rd May) afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the site at around 3.30pm, but the person tragically died at the scene. Police have confirmed the death will be referred to WorkSafe and the Coroner for further investigation.

The incident took place at the Te Anau transfer station, which is operated by WasteCo under contract to Southland District Council. WasteCo staff and Police are currently at the location, and an investigation into the circumstances is underway.

Fran Mikulicic, Southland District Council group manager, said, "All our thoughts and sympathy are with the family of the deceased." She added, "The whole of Council is shocked and saddened by the tragic news."

The Council has advised that the Te Anau transfer station will remain closed at least until Monday while investigations continue. Due to the ongoing inquiries, the Council will not be making any further comments at this stage.

WorkSafe has also been notified and is expected to carry out a separate investigation into the incident.
