Two people have died in a helicopter crash in Mt Aspiring National Park this morning while on a hunting trip.

Reports of the incident came in around 9.50am, with Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre initially handling the response before handing over to police.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Waugh from Cromwell CIB confirmed the helicopter was a chartered craft with two people on board at the time of the crash.

"I can now confirm the helicopter was a chartered craft, and the occupants were on a hunting trip," Waugh said. "The two people who died were the sole occupants of the craft at the time."

Three other members of the hunting group were located on the ground and taken to safety.

Police are providing support to the families of those killed in the crash.

"Our condolences go out to their loved ones, who we are providing support," Waugh said.

The deaths have been referred to the Coroner, with both the Civil Aviation Authority and the Transport Accident Investigation Commission notified of the incident.

Police enquiries into the crash are ongoing, with officers remaining at the scene in the national park.

Further information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
