The Ulva Island wharf is fully operational again following the completion of essential maintenance work, ensuring continued access for visitors over the summer months. The wharf, located at Post Office Cove, is the only landing point on Ulva Island, a predator-free sanctuary within Paterson Inlet that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Owned by Southland District Council, the Ulva Island wharf is one of several marine structures the council manages on Stewart Island. Restrictions were placed on the wharf in 2023 after concerns were raised about its condition, prompting the need for urgent repairs to maintain safety and accessibility during peak visitor periods.

Chief executive Cameron McIntosh said the recent work was focused on keeping the wharf operational while longer-term plans progress. “Restrictions were placed on the wharf in 2023 over concerns about its condition. Repairs have now been carried out to keep the wharf operational for the peak visitor period,” he said.

Planning for a complete rebuild of the wharf is already well advanced, with construction expected to begin once the current visitor season ends. “Planning is well under way for a full rebuild of the wharf in its current location once the season concludes,” Mr McIntosh said. The new wharf is scheduled for completion by October 2026, with exact timeframes to be confirmed once final approvals are in place.

The rebuild project will be supported by a mix of funding sources, including a 50 per cent grant from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund and contributions from the Stewart Island Visitor Levy. Council has confirmed it will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the project progresses smoothly. These include iwi, the Department of Conservation, the Hunter Family Trust, and local tourism operators who rely on safe and reliable access to the island.

“Ulva Island is a jewel in Southland’s crown. This maintenance ensures visitors can enjoy it safely this summer, and the planned rebuild will secure access for generations to come,” Mr McIntosh said.

The Ulva Island work is part of a wider programme of improvements across Paterson Inlet. Repairs have also been completed at the Millars Beach jetty and the Golden Bay wharf, ensuring key visitor infrastructure is ready in time for the busy holiday season.
