NZTA have updated the detours for the North Road resealing works to improve traffic flow, particularly during peak school and commuter times.
The following changes will be in place:
- During peak periods (8:15am–9:30am and 2:30pm–6:00pm), Gloucester Street southbound will be closed at West Plains Road.
- Northbound vehicles on West Plains Road will be required to turn onto North Road.
Drivers travelling west or southbound on West Plains Road who wish to access Gloucester Street during these times are encouraged to use West Plains School Road via Bay Road instead.
Work is progressing on North Road. The first section to Durham St has now been paved, with the final 50mm layer still to be completed.
NZTA: Our last post generated a lot of comment, and we'd like to answer a few of the questions raised:
- Running northbound traffic in the inside southbound lane (a 'contraflow'), as many have suggested, would mean no access whatsoever to any of the businesses or homes on the northbound side between Renfrew St and West Plains Road. It would also limit access to Sacred Heart School.
- Our start date was chosen specifically because of the proximity of the end of the school term. Our crews will be working through most of Easter (taking Easter Saturday off for a well-earned rest), and by the time Term 2 begins, most of this work should be complete.
- We are going down 200mm because of the thickness of the original asphalt surfacing in this area — this is a complete replacement. Due to the size of the milling and paving machines, our crews need both lanes to move safely around the site.
We also ask road users not to attempt to shift cones and barriers to get through the site. There is no way through, and doing so puts yourself and your vehicle at risk.

Queens Drive Asphalt Resurfacing
Night time asphalt resurfacing works are under way on Queens Drive, from St Andrew Street to outside the Water Tower Reserve.
Works began on the night of Sunday 29 March and run through to Thursday 2 April, with milling and asphalt resurfacing being carried out during each nightshift. The road will be closed from 5:30pm each night and reopened before 6:00am the following morning.
Please note that all works on Thursday 2 April will cease by midnight ahead of the Good Friday public holiday, regardless of progress at that point.
