This week’s Word About Town kicks off with some tasty news — Popeyes have confirmed they’ll be opening on September 8 at 10am, bringing their world-famous fried chicken to Invercargill. It will be the first Popeyes in the South Island, as reported by whatsoninvers.nz back in April, with Christchurch set to get the second store in the next few months.

On the property front, Property Brokers are on the move, bringing their Invercargill and Southland team — currently in two offices across town — under one roof at the former Hyundai Southland building on Yarrow Street next to GWD Toyota.

At the same time, Harcourts have shifted their property management team into the old Westpac in Windsor while renovations are carried out on their Dee Street offices.

Dear Lily has also relocated, moving from Esk Street to Kelvin Street, taking over the former Voyant site — while Voyant themselves shifted just across the street back in March.

And while some people marked Dry July by giving up alcohol, JB Hi-Fi Invercargill staff had a different take — plunging into the freezing surf at Oreti Beach in the middle of winter. The event was held to support mental health, raising $3026 for McKenzie’s Gift, a charity providing mental health support for children and teenagers.

Meanwhile, the long-running effort to bring back the BP Highway service station on Tay Street continues. It passed the two-year mark last month since it was closed and left idle, with progress only starting again about three months ago. Work is ongoing, but there’s still no confirmed reopening date.
