Yep. folks it's on again today, the 2026 Melbourne Cup.

Firstly, the weather. This from racenet.com.au. They're expecting a mostly cloudy day with a high of 18 and a chance of showers in the morning. It has been raining in Melbourne yesterday (Mon). Winds from the south becoming light as the day goes on.

At time of writing there will be a field of 24 of the best horses from Australia and around the world racing for a prize pot of over $10million !
There are no New Zealand-trained horses in the Cup this year, but two New Zealand-bred horses - Asterix and Shockletz.

Former Kiwi Trainer Chris Waller who is having a superb run in the Aussie spring carnival, has a number of horses in the field.
Another former kiwi, jockey James McDonald is riding the Joseph O’Brien-trained Trustyourinstinct. JMac is also having a rich vein of form in this year's Spring Carnival. Anything the top ranked jockey rides must be a contender as he has a record of 2800plus wins over a stellar career.

Champion trainer Chris Waller said this about McDonald "He doesn’t care what he rides — he respects our decision and that’s why he ends up on the winner.”
Again at time of writing, current favourite is Point of Law following his Geelong Cup victory with Trustyourinstinct, Defiantly and HopewellRock close behind.
The big race at Flemington goes at 5 this afternoon. (Tuesday).
