The Museum of Southland will be free to enter for everyone — no door charge, no tiered pricing for out-of-towners.
Invercargill City Council's Community and Regulatory Committee settled the question at its meeting today, landing on free general admission after crunching the numbers on what a ticket fee would actually raise.
It wasn't always the obvious call. Mayor Tom Campbell said council had initially leaned toward charging international visitors, or possibly anyone from outside Southland. But the sums didn't stack up. "When we looked at forecasts of how little money that would raise after paying admin costs and the cost of having staff on the door to collect it, we decided it just wasn't worth it," Campbell said.
Instead, the museum will run a prominent voluntary giving system alongside a deliberate push to drive spending in the shop and cafe. Campbell said the evidence from museums overseas supports that approach. "There is plenty of evidence from museums around the world that revenue from those sources will be significant, and maybe better than a door fee," he said.
Free entry removes a friction point that can quietly kill visitor numbers, especially for families and casual drop-ins. A well-stocked shop and cafe, positioned where people flow naturally on the way out, tends to do the rest. It's a model that works — and council appears to have weighed that seriously rather than just defaulting to it.
On timing: the museum is roughly a year away from opening, which is later than originally hoped. Campbell was straightforward about why. "We have prioritised keeping costs within budget over shaving time off by paying overtime or extra staff rates to contractors," he said.
The physical build is essentially done. Campbell confirmed the base construction and internal fitout will be complete this month, with the remaining time before opening day going toward setting up displays and getting the place ready to receive visitors.
"It's going to be fantastic," he said.
The Museum of Southland is shaping up as the most significant cultural opening Invercargill has seen in years. Free entry means no one has a reason not to walk through the door.
