Stewart Island air services have taken off thanks to Government support announced today, Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds says.
"A $640,000 loan to South East Air, owner of aircraft operated by Stewart Island Flights, will support the refurbishment and return to service of an aircraft it owns - boosting the fleet from four to five aircraft.
"This is all about ensuring reliable air services for the economic and social wellbeing of the Stewart Island community.
"Boosting air services will help support economic growth on Stewart Island through tourism and trade.
"But better air services will also improve peace of mind for island residents' enhancing access to healthcare services and education, along with improving response times in an emergency.
"It's important to note that this support is not a bailout, with funding coming in the form of a concessionary loan.
"Stewart Island is an important part of the Invercargill electorate and I am delighted to see local people being given this support through enhanced air services.
"The loan to South East Air is part of a $30 million Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) package developed in 2025 to support vulnerable regional air services," Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds said.
