Northland MP Grant McCallum visited Southern Institute of Technology last Friday to explore the polytechnic's flexible learning options as he works to secure NorthTec's return to independence by 2027.
Mr McCallum toured SIT's School of Nursing clinical suites and examined the institute's three delivery modes - onsite, HyFlex and distance learning - as part of his research into improving tertiary education in Northland.
The MP is working closely with Invercargill MP and Minister for Tertiary Education Hon Penny Simmonds to help NorthTec regain its independence after being merged with other institutions.
SIT's HyFlex delivery system particularly caught Mr McCallum's attention. The hybrid-flexible approach allows students to mix in-person campus learning with online study, either during scheduled class times or at their own pace.
"HyFlex delivery looks to be the most promising for a region like Northland as it allows working people to study when it suits them, removing barriers to further education," Mr McCallum noted.
SIT was an early adopter of the HyFlex system, which gives students flexibility in how they achieve their qualifications. Students can choose any combination of face-to-face classes, live online sessions, and self-paced online study. Importantly, they have the same tutor across all three learning modes and access to identical resources and student interactions as their peers.
The visit focused heavily on nursing education, as NorthTec operates a highly regarded nursing degree programme and is looking at building simulation clinical suites similar to those at SIT.
Mr McCallum said the campus tour demonstrated the value of quality tertiary education in regional centres like Invercargill and Southland.
"Once again, this highlights the importance of the progress we have made by securing funding for the rebuild of NorthTec," he said after viewing SIT's nursing facilities.
The visit underscores the collaborative approach being taken to strengthen regional polytechnics across New Zealand, with successful institutes like SIT serving as models for others working toward independence.
