Stewart Island Salmon Farm Gets Fast-track Go-ahead

Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds has welcomed a decision to fast-track approval of the Hananui Aquaculture Project off Stewart Island (Rakiura), saying it will provide a massive boost for the local economy.

"Once it's fully operational, this aquaculture project will produce over 14000 tonnes of salmon per year, generating more than $310 million in sales, and most importantly creating up to 480 jobs in our province.

"This is an incredible boost for Invercargill and Southland and it has significant longterm potential for our province.

"Aquaculture provides a significant opportunity for the diversification of our regional economy, creating jobs and wealth.

"Our region has the opportunity to be a leader in the aquaculture sector, utilising our natural advantages of a cooler climate, clear waters and 3600 Km of coastline.

"The Stewart Island Hahanui aquaculture project is the second to be fast-tracked by Government in Southland this year, creating amazing opportunities for our province.

"The Slopedown wind farm, near Wyndham, was granted a fast-track approval in April this year, with the project set to inject $13.5 million into the local economy and create up to 300 jobs during construction.

"The development of this wind farm has also provided Tiwai Aluminium smelter with the energy security it needs to restart its 4th potline - providing more job security and regional economic growth for our province.

"The Fast-track approvals process is effective because it allows projects to proceed sooner, supporting local jobs and regional growth - something that benefits everyone in Southland," Invercargill MP Penny Simmonds said.
