Environment Southland has appointed Stephen Hall as its new Chief Executive, with the regional council veteran set to start on July 20.

Hall brings more than 25 years of experience in resource management and regional councils to the role, including time at Bay of Plenty Regional Council and executive positions at Taranaki Regional Council and Environment Canterbury.

Council Chair Jeremy McPhail said Hall was chosen after a competitive recruitment process for his proven leadership and strong alignment with Environment Southland's goals.

"Stephen brings the experience and relationships we need to keep delivering for Murihiku Southland – including our work on flood risk management and improving water quality. No matter what changes are ahead for local government, Environment Southland's responsibilities will remain, and Stephen will ensure we continue to deliver for our communities, and support our people through what's ahead," McPhail said.

Hall is known for building high-performing teams and strong partnerships, with connections across the regional sector, with Ngai Tahu, and central government.

The incoming chief executive is no stranger to Southland, having visited the region regularly with his family over the past 20 years, particularly Fiordland and Stewart Island.

"I'm excited to be coming to a region that has a strong history of the community working together to get the best solutions for Southland. I believe in the vital functions the regional council delivers and I'm keen to work with the team to continue that. Southland is a place I know and care about, and I'm looking forward to making it our home," Hall said.

Hall will replace former Environment Southland Chief Executive Rob Phillips, who has been acting in the role since Wilma Falconer retired last year.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for Environment Southland as it continues work on flood risk management and water quality improvements across the region.
